Why Work Is Life (If You Want to Create Happiness and Business Success)

You can build a successful business based on people’s happiness. Not only is it possible, it is necessary.

It all started when I read the book, ‘Pour Your Heart into It’ by Howard Schultz, Starbucks CEO. In it he expressed his passion for building a business with a unique culture and community. In the book “Pour Your Heart into It” Howard Schultz writes that people will do their best work when they feel part of the company and community. Everyone feels the ownership and delivering the happy / respected culture to their colleagues and customers. That helps business to be succeessful more than others. Some people would say becase this is customer service, hospitality related business so this would be best way to run the operations but I believe that every business should have this foundation and roots to be successful. Because in the end, it’s about people.

This idea resonates with me because I’ve seen and felt what its like. During my career I’ve been part of some amazing teams. I’ve found the times when my teams are most successful we weren’t just working. We were living. We loved what we were doing so much that it wasn’t work. It was part of us. We were collaborating together and inspiring one another. When you touch people’s heart, there’s always something more than what you think. (This is something I want to talk more later..) When I woke up each day, I knew what I wanted to do. So it wasn’t “work” anymore, it was life, because it was the thing that I was inpired to wake up and do.

Building a culture like that is possible. Some companies starts with creating a collborative, fun space where people can have fun (fun factor does really work!), be excited, work together more such as open floor, more brainstorming time, hiring the right people who fits to the culture, and communicating the vision efficiently. Also, senior managers put people first. When they do this ‘genuinely’, people can feel it (can’t fake it, you gotta truly feel it) and they want to do the best job because they care people who they are working with. Late hour working doesn’t mean much, because they are willing to do it, happy to do. This is new leadership that should be admired and pursued..

And the point is it makes businesses more successful too! here are some statistics.

  1. the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick found that happy workers are 12 percent more productive than the average worker, and unhappy workers are 10 percent less productive. In fact, unhappy employees cost American business over $300 billion each year.
  2. Last year revenues increased by an average of 22.2 percent for the 2014 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For. And according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these same companies added new employees at rate that was five times higher than the national average.
  3. A company’s culture has a direct impact on employee turnover, which affects productivity, and therefore success. A Columbia University study shows that the likelihood of job turnover at an organization with rich company culture is a mere 13.9 percent, whereas the probability of job turnover in poor company cultures is 48.4 percent.
  4. companies with happy employees outperform the competition by 20 percent, earn 1.2 to 1.7 percent more than their peer firms, and are 2.1 percent above industry benchmarks. Happy workers are also more likely to solve difficult problems faster.
  5. Companies with engaged employees outperform those without by up to 202%
  6. low-level engagement within companies results in a 33 percent decrease in operating income and an 11 percent decrease in earnings growth, whereas companies with high-level engagement have a 19 percent increase in operating income and a 28 percent increase in earnings growth.

However, let’s not focus on creating culture only because it will make us more money. This is just starting point to make it better for what we have already. I believe that this is worth considering because we can create amazing value that can benefit people, and society, all around the world.
